A glimpse of summers past

By Bridget Cook
GET an insight into what life was like in Greater Dandenong in the 1950s and 1960s with the ‘Summer in the Suburbs’ exhibition at Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens.
The exhibition celebrates summer fashions and suburban trends from the 1950s and 1960s.
The display incorporates items that belonged to the Hart family, the original owners of Benga House that sits on the grounds of Heritage Hill, as well as City of Greater Dandenong’s own collections.
Public program and exhibition officer, Angela Costigan, described them as excellent examples of conservative, middle-class women’s fashions of the 1950s.
Items on show include dresses, swimwear, hats and sunglasses, as well as a range of historic photographs, advertisements and magazines.
“Everything on display depicts people enjoying summer during the 1950s and 1960s,” she said.
The exhibition will be open to the public until Wednesday, 11 March, from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and from noon to 4pm on Sunday.
Entry is by gold coin donation.
