Police act on motorbike trauma

A POLICE initiative to create a safer environment for motorcyclists has been launched across the state.
The two-year project – called the Community Policing and Enforcement to Reduce Motorcycle Road Trauma Program – will be the first of its kind in Victoria.
It will see 10 marked police motorcycles added to the police fleet to target more areas.
Assistant Commissioner for traffic and transit safety Ken Lay said the aim of the initiative was to reduce the number of motorcycle fatalities and serious injuries each year.
Last year, 42 motorcyclists and one pillion passenger lost their lives on the state’s roads, with 1139 others seriously injured.
So far in 2009, five motorcyclists have been killed in Victoria.
