Life of service

By Bridget Cook
LIFE-LONG Springvale resident Marian Rollings was recognised on the Queen’s Birthday honours list on Monday for a lifetime of service to the local community.
Mrs Rollings, who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia, said receiving the recognition was overwhelming.
“I felt very proud to receive the award,” she said.
“To think that someone thought I was worthy of being recommended for this special award was quite overwhelming.”
During her life in Springvale, Mrs Rollings has been involved in many community groups and organisation.
She was foundation member of the Springvale and District Historical Society which was formed in 1982, of which she has been president for three years, honorary secretary and treasurer, and was awarded a life membership in 2001.
She was a member of the Springvale District Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary for 30 years and was president for 12 of them.
Mrs Rollings has also volunteered 34 years of service to the Springvale branch of the Red Cross blood bank.
Since 1974 Mrs Rollings has been a member of the Springvale Uniting Church, where she is currently a member of the church council and chair of the friendship group.
This is not the first recognition she has received for her outstanding service, being named City of Springvale Citizen of the Year in 1987.
Mrs Rollings said she volunteered as she enjoyed working for the community.
“It gives great pleasure doing this work,” she said. “I love getting to know the people I work with and have made many life-long friends.”
