A POLICE pursuit through Dandenong reached more than 210km/h early on Sunday morning before the car being chased rammed a police car.
Detective Senior Constable Stuart Freeman said Traffic Management Unit police on routine patrols tried to intercept a speeding blue Falcon XR6 sedan.
“When police used their siren and lights the car continued outbound along the Princes Highway,” he said.
“Police were forced to terminate the pursuit once the vehicle reached excessive speeds over 210km/h because of concerns for the safety of the public.”
Det Freeman said that police saw the car continue to run red lights and drive in a dangerous manner before being stuck in traffic at the intersection of Clow Street and the highway.
“So police again used their siren and lights,” he said. “They observed a male driver and his female passenger.”
One officer got out of the police car at the lights to make an arrest, but the traffic had moved and the XR6 rammed into the police car passenger door before fleeing.
Police made an arrest that morning at the driver’s residence, Det Freeman said.
A 22-year-old from Bentleigh East was charged with conduct endangering life, driving without authorisation, excessive speed and other traffic offences.
He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 4 August.
