SERVICE is the underlying principle of the Lions Club and after more than 30 years with the Dandenong branch Keerthi Gunawardana still sets a perfect example.
Dr Gunawardana, the current branch president, has taken on many leadership roles and been recognised on numerous occasions for his contribution since joining in 1977.
This year he will step down as president but will continue his involvement.
He has been president of the Dandenong Club on two other occasions, and in 1994 received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, which is the highest form of recognition in Lionism.
The amount of time Dr Gunawardana dedicates to the Lions Club varies from week to week, from 14 hours in one weekend, when doing blood pressure testing at events, to two to three hours fortnightly.
He said what he enjoyed most about Lions was its multiculturalism and that they helped people from all walks of life.
“We help with things big and small while working with people young and old.”
Very satisfying service
