GREATER Dandenong councillor Jim Memeti is concerned for the safety of pedestrians on Dandenong’s Lonsdale Street while revitalisation works are underway.
Cr Memeti raised the issue at the last council meeting, saying that rough-surfaced footpaths – a result of works being conducted by VicUrban – posed a safety risk to residents.
Cr Memeti said he wanted to try and get the council to assist VicUrban to make the site safer.
“I understand that it is a huge job and VicUrban is probably doing the best job they can, but I think parts of the footpaths are dangerous,” Cr Memeti said.
“I just worry that people, particularly the elderly, could trip over and hurt themselves.
“I think the council could help to put in measures to make the site safer.”
Cr Memeti said he became aware of the rough footpaths when he was driving past, as well as through chatting to concerned residents.
However, VicUrban development director Michael King said they have been committed to maintaining the highest safety standards throughout the construction and delivery of the $20 million transformation of Lonsdale Street.
“The task of transforming an active street while minimising disruption does present constantly evolving challenges,” Mr King said.
“In recognition of this fact, VicUrban is working closely with safety experts and Lonsdale Street traders to ensure safety measures are constantly reviewed, assessed and amended if necessary.”
VicUrban has appointed an independent safety auditor.
