Station CCTV still way off

THE City of Greater Dandenong has ruled out installing closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at Springvale Railway Station in the near future.
After the launch of the council’s CCTV pilot program in Menzies Avenue, Dandenong, this month, Carrum Downs residents Graeme Besley and Irene Penny asked if cameras could be installed pointing towards the Sandown Road shops to deter gangs from the area.
Dandenong director of community services Mark Doubleday said the council intended to review the Menzies Avenue project before any future cameras were installed.
“The council will review that pilot in six months … and then make decisions regarding any future installations based on that,” he said.
“So at this point in time there is no proposal to introduce any further CCTV systems, but the matter raised will be looked at.”
He said the council would work with local police on issues such as gangs hanging around shopping centres.
