A DEVELOPER has been chosen and a design created for the new State Government offices in Dandenong.
On Monday, VicUrban announced the appointment of Grocon to develop the modern buildings in central Dandenong.
The building will be one of the first developments delivered on land acquired by VicUrban as part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2010 and will be completed in the second half of 2011. About 400 full-time employment positions for the region are expected to be created during construction.
The government building will feature 14,100 square metres of office space for the Department of Human Services, Department of Justice, Department of Planning and Community Development and Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
Grocon was the successful bidder following a detailed review and assessment of 13 initial responses to VicUrban’s call for expressions of interest.
Grocon’s General Manager – Departments Carolyn Viney said Grocon was proud to be delivering a landmark building under the Revitalising Dandenong initiative.
“The building is consistent with Grocon’s sustainability platform and is expected to become an instant landmark that sets a high standard for all new buildings that follow in the Revitalising Central Dandenong Initiative,” she said.
VicUrban’s CEO Pru Sanderson said the announcement demonstrated the State Government’s $290 million investment in Revitalising Central Dandenong was creating new private sector opportunities within this important Central Activities District.
“The fact that Grocon has seen fit to invest in Dandenong is evidence that the work undertaken by VicUrban and council- in consultation with the local community – is creating viable commercial development opportunities; the likes of which have not been seen here for many years.”
The Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative, delivered by VicUrban in partnership with the City of Greater Dandenong, aims to attract more than $1 billion of private investment over the next 15 to 20 years and to restore Dandenong as the capital of Melbourne’s south-east.
