THE Springvale fire station opened its doors on Saturday to give the community a look behind the scenes at a fire station.
Officer in charge Sean Kerr said about 500 people came through the doors and were treated to a number of displays and activities.
“They showed what they do on a day-to-day basis fire-fighting wise,” Mr Kerr said.
“We found it to be a great opportunity to interact with the community.”
The Open Day showed off the CFA’s fire-fighting equipment, the fire station and included demonstrations, mock rescues, kids’ activities and a visit from CFA mascot, Captain Koala.
The day also aimed to engage the wider community and provide local families, including from non-English speaking backgrounds, with a better understanding of what the local fire service does.
The fire station hopes the open day will be a regular event and Mr Kerr said next year would be bigger and better.
