A LARGE group of students at Lighthouse Christian College will be forgoing something important to them when they participate in the 40 hour famine this weekend.
The 85 students and three teachers will be going without things like eating, talking and furniture for 40 hours to raise awareness for children living in poverty.
Posters have been stuck around the school to promote the event and a bulletin has also been placed on the school Facebook page.
For most students, it will be their very first time doing the 40-hour famine.
Year 10 student Yohan Madduma said he thought it was a good time to do his part to make the world a better place.
“I’m not talking for 40 hours,” he said.
“I think it’s symbolic for many children and many people in poverty who don’t have a voice in the community, so I just wanted to see what it was like.”
For Year 8 student Camille Agustin, it was more about putting herself in the shoes of those who aren’t as privileged.
“I’m going without food and technology,” she said.
“There are a lot of people who don’t have the things that we do and I wanted to put myself in their perspective and see how they would live.”
The school hopes to raise more than $1000.
