FIVE students from Killester College in Springvale experienced life as a person with a disability for a day.
The students attended the Scope Young Ambassadors Conference on Wednesday 7 September to meet and speak to people with disabilities and appreciate their daily struggles.
Year 12 student Silvia said they did activities during the day which demonstrated how difficult having a disability can be.
“We did activities that showed us how hard it is to be a person with a disability,” she said.
“It really showed us not to take what we have for granted – like being able to walk or see and touch.”
The conference welcomed about 300 students from across Victoria, who took part in a wheelchair relay, activities without speaking, seeing or hearing, a writing challenge without hands and produced a self-portrait without hands.
“It was really fun and it showed us that even without hands we can still create beautiful pictures,” Silvia said of the portrait challenge.
Killester College teacher Vicki Alexellis said the students had a great day.
“It introduced them to different aspects of life and the students got excited by what they saw and heard,” Ms Alexellis said. “They said it was very worthwhile.”
Killester College also took part in Scope Schools Week this week by encouraging students to See the Person.
