AFTER almost three months, Operation Summerstay is coming to a close, but not without successes.
The operation, which ran from 18 November and finished last Sunday, saw Greater Dandenong police nab 22 drink drivers and motorists for 548 other offences including speed, seatbelts and using mobile phones.
Police conducted more than 5500 random breath tests and committed nearly 4000 patrol hours towards keeping the road safe.
Acting Senior Sergeant Pat McGavigan with the Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol said they are very pleased with the result and warned motorists that while the operation is finishing, police will still be out there targeting offending drivers.
“Only two serious road traumas had occurred for the whole period which is an outstanding result and we’re very happy with it,” he said.
“We could be two better but it’s better than it could be.
“A lot of people get too complacent when driving cars and driving cars takes concentration… that moment of misjudgement is when incidents happen and that’s what we’re trying to stop.
“We’re enforcing (the road rules) as hard as we can to stop people getting hurt.”
State wide, police breath tested 1,128,359 motorists, nabbing 2610 drink drivers, 397 drug drivers and 4510 disqualified and unlicensed drivers.
They detected 3584 seatbelt offences, 23,050 speeding offences, 5734 mobile phone offences and impounded 433 vehicles.
