JUMPED by the harder hitting Lions, the Burra has been left to wonder what happened in its 9.4 (58) to 10.6 (66) capitulation against Murrumbeena.
The first quarter emphatically belonged to Keysborough – living up to its high-calibre season through the first term to smash past the third placed Murrumbeena.
But the four-goal opening term would be the highlight of the Burra’s afternoon as the falling rain seemed to rally the under-dogs, nee under-lions, as Murrumbeena lashed back.
Woeful possession-play through the centre, and especially off the half-back line, did Keysborough no favours.
As soon as the half-backs would boot it out, the Lions gobbled it back up and pumped it long.
Will Gayfer and Scott Chamberlain had to fight out back time-in, time-out, but the vicious circle ensnared the Burra through the second term, allowing Murrumbeena to boot three goals and cut the margin dramatically.
It would not get any better for the Burra after half time as Murrumbeena dug in and hit up Alex Moloney (4 goals) among others at will.
The Burra conceded the lead in the dying stages of the term and wouldn’t recover it, as two goals apiece to Davor Rajic, Bryce Sutton and coach Ryan Goodes wasn’t enough to help the Burra hold on in the first finals’ upset of 2015.
Tim Bacic, Dan Morland, Geoff Humphreys and Shaun Dunn were best afield for Keysborough in the eight-point defeat.
Keysborough is left to lick its wounds and face either Skye or Caulfield in an elimination final on Sunday 6 September from 2.15pm
