Intruders attacked a couple in their Dandenong North home, as their three children hid.
Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are investigating the aggravated burglary, which occurred about 10pm on Sunday 20 August.
They said the victims were watching television when someone smashed a bedroom window.
A 45-year-old man opened the front door to investigate and a number of men tried to force their way in.
A struggle ensued as he blocked them from entering the home.
The female victim, 44, ran to his aid and they managed to force the group back out of the house.
They fled empty-handed.
The man was struck over the head during the incident and the woman suffered an injury to her hand. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.
Three children, aged 11, 12, and 17, were present at the time and were uninjured.
Investigators believe the group included three men and a woman, all perceived to be of African appearance and wearing hooded tops and face coverings.
Detectives released CCTV vision of people who might be able to assist with their inquiries.
They urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
