Road acid spill charges

By Casey Neill

A TRUCK driver is facing charges over an acid spill in Keysborough on Tuesday, which forced road closures and evacuations.
The CFA was called to the Springvale and Hutton roads intersection about 11am when a corrosive chemical was found spilling from a 1000 litre container.
A CFA scientific officer determined the chemical was a mix of sulphuric and hydrochloric acid.
Firefighters wearing gas suits mixed soda ash into the acids to neutralise the spill.
Police blocked off roads in the immediate area and relocated five people in a nearby restaurant and service station.
Acting Sergeant John Murray said the Greater Dandenong Traffic Management Unit was investigating the incident.
“They’ll be looking at all aspects of the load securing and transport to see whether it complies with legislation,” he said.
“We don’t expect that he’ll be just walking away from this with a fine.
“A full brief of evidence will be submitted and because of the seriousness of the incident he’ll be fronting court.”
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) attended the scene to remove the container.
No one was injured in the incident, which was cleared about 3pm.
