A POLICE officer with 12 years’ experience had never seen anyone struck by a train survive.
A 22-year-old St Albans man changed that on 1 August.
With a train approaching, boom and pedestrian gates closed and bells ringing, he climbed under the barriers from the north side of Springvale Road and dashed across the tracks about 8.37am.
The train clipped him, but Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Nick Lamb said he astonishingly suffered only minor injuries and walked from the scene to join a group of associates.
Attending protective services officers (PSOs) issued him with a penalty notice.
“People need to take note when they’re around trains and be safe and cross at the appropriate time,” Det Sen Const Lamb said.
“It’s very lucky in this instance that he wasn’t killed.
“Not many people walk away from getting hit by a train.”
Lucky escape but penalised
