Detective is on the charity case

Detective Sergeant Dean Hayes and captain of the Woolworth's team Dave Bullock.

I AM always inspired by the incredible lengths people go to in order to raise money for charity.
A case on point is the wonderful effort by members of Dandenong Criminal Investigation Unit who are gearing up for the annual Murray to Moyne charity ride.
On Sunday 23 February officers taking part in the ride played a charity cricket match against Woolworths employees at Lynbrook Cricket Club.
The match, which was won by some fine batting and bowling on behalf of the police, raised just under $2000.
Woolworths is the CIU team’s major sponsor.
The Murray to Moyne ride takes participants on a 520 kilometre two-day ride from Echuca to Port Fairy, starting on 5 April.
This year’s ride will be the sixth for Detective Sergeant Dean Hayes.
He will be joined by a team of up to 30 other officers and support crew.
Over the past five years the Dandenong CIU team has raised more than $45,000 and hopes to add another $10,000 to the tally this year, which will be donated to the children’s ward at Dandenong Hospital.

Muck in for clean-up
And while not everyone can cycle hundreds of kilometres for charity, there are lots of other opportunities to contribute to the local community.
I’m thinking in particular of the annual Community Clean-Up Day at Hemmings Park in Dandenong which is scheduled for Saturday 15 March.
The free community event focuses on preventing and removing graffiti.
The City of Greater Dandenong, Victoria Police and Neighbourhood Watch are hosting the event, which has been funded thanks to a $13,000 grant from the Victorian Government.
Activities will include:
• graffiti removal activities and demonstrations;
• mobile animal farm and jumping castle;
• a visit from a CFA fire truck and Victoria Police vehicle;
• free sausage sizzle;
• Rugby activities.
Free graffiti removal kits will also be handed out to encourage the community to continue the good work.
“You can also hear from Victoria Police on community safety issues, learn about Neighbourhood Watch initiatives and find out about a range of council services,” Mayor Jim Memeti said.
“This family friendly event will engage the whole community, boost pride in the area and offer a chance to make new connections.”
Those who want to help out should pull on their gloves for a 10am start.
Helpers are encouraged to join in the effort any time through to 2pm.
