THE City of Greater Dandenong has won a prestigious award for its commitment to stamping out racism.
Council’s “Racism. Get Up. Speak Out.” project was awarded the ‘Multicultural Australia – strength in diversity’ award at last week’s National Awards for Local Government.
Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti said council was incredibly proud of the project and delighted with the award.
“Racism. Get Up. Speak Out. was motivated by council’s strong commitment to building an inclusive and fair community for all,” Cr Memeti said.
“As Victoria’s most multicultural community, we are incredibly proud of our residents who come from 150 different nations, speak over 200 different languages and follow more than 100 different faiths.”
Cr Memeti said Racism. Get Up. Speak Out. was a practical, local response to the National Anti-Racism Strategy.
“It built greater understanding of different cultures, developed stronger community ties and collectively took a stand against racism through sharing stories that affirm and celebrate positive responses to acts against racism,” Cr Memeti said.
