MP to be asked for asylum help

GREATER Dandenong Council intends to co-opt Liberal Senator Mitch Fifield to act as a go-between in its campaign for more federal resources for helping asylum seekers living in the community.
Last Monday community services director Mark Doubleday said a statement advocating for the cause had been signed by Greater Dandenong and other Victorian councils.
The council was approaching Senator Fifield to “seek an audience” with the government to present the statement, he said.
The Mentone-based senator was chosen as the closest federal Liberal MP to Greater Dandenong, Mr Doubleday told the council.
According to the councils, asylum seekers are disproportionately reliant on charities, agencies and volunteers due to a shortage of federal resources.
Last week Senator Fifield appeared to support the status-quo.
He said the government provided a range of support services for recently settled migrants, including for people seeking to “resolve their immigration status” and refugees.
