Brigade’s missing Miles

By CASEY NEILL

THE Miles name is missing from the Noble Park Fire Brigade member roll for the first time in its history.
George Miles’ uncle was a founding member in 1929 and his father served as captain.
The life-member died on 28 July with his wife Aileen and family by his side.
George signed up to serve with the crew in May 1952 and was a foreman, first lieutenant and apparatus officer.
Brigade captain Terence Sanford said George was presented with his 60-year service pin at his funeral, held at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, on 5 August.
“This is the first time this has happened – usually it’s presented to next of kin if the member has passed away,” he said.
During his lifetime, George received a National Service Medal, Queens FBLS and GC Medal.
He’d been a non-operational member since 2001 and last year gave the toast to the Queen at the brigade’s 85th anniversary dinner.
