Dandenong students are taking centre court, thanks to Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre.
Emerson School is a specialist school that caters to students with mild intellectual processing difficulties.
The YMCA centre partnered with the school so students could complete VET Certificate II in Sport and Recreation.
“In the morning, the wonderful staff have accommodated a temporary classroom in the hall where students complete written tasks,” Emerson School teacher Kevin Van Twest said.
“From there, we move to the gym which has state-of-the-art equipment and knowledgeable trainers assisting us.
“After lunch, the class moves onto a basketball court, where we have developed skills in basketball, tennis, soccer and handball to name a few sports.”
Mr Van Twest said staff had been very supportive and understanding of the students’ disabilities.
Leisure centre manager Susie Nogic said it was great to see how excited the students were when they came in.
“They have enjoyed learning new exercises, and working towards their fitness goals,” she said.
