Sweet taste of excess

The hot jam, sugar and deep fried dough will be flowing at Dandenong Market for National Donut Day.
Dandee Donuts will hand out free doughnuts in Market Square from 8am to 4pm on Friday 2 June.
Owner Susan Bell said she couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the sweetest day of the year than with Dandenong Market customers.
“They have been so supportive of Dandee Donuts over the last 40 years,” she said.
“Our donuts evoke childhood memories for many people, particularly at the Dandenong Market where we have been operating for several generations – so what better way to celebrate?”
The gold and purple van has been a market fixture since the late 1970s.
Market spokeswoman Briony Walker said Dandee Donuts was one of the market’s most popular traders, drawing people “not just from Melbourne, but all over Australia with a strong and loyal following”.
“We are expecting to be handing over thousands of donuts to market visitors,” she said.
The doughnuts are freshly made and cooked on-site, rather than frozen and cooked elsewhere.
