The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) is bringing two movies to Dandenong.
The Drum Theatre will screen Dr Rakhmabai at 7.30pm on Tuesday 15 August and Dangal at 7.30pm on Friday 18 August.
Dr Rakhmabai’s fight against her unconsented child marriage, gender discrimination and right to practice medicine in India was isolating and ostracising in a highly conservative colonial India.
She pushed back and paved the way for Indian women.
Star of the film, Tannishtha Chatterjee, will meet fans from 7pm.
Dangal is based on a true story but has been given the full Bollywood treatment.
Aamir Khan stars as an ex-wrestler whose Olympic dreams were once crushed by a lack of money.
Years later, having failed to produce a son, he commits to turning his daughters into champions.
This is the second time the IFFM has visited Dandenong.
The State Government established the festival in 2012 to celebrate cinema from India and the subcontinent.
“We are delighted to strengthen our relationship with the City of Greater Dandenong and bring this wonderful celebration of film to the local community,” IFFM festival director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said.
“Cinema is a wonderful cultural bridge and we are honoured to have a committed partner who shares the same values as us.”
Tickets are priced from $5. Visit www.drumtheatre.com.au or call 8571 1666 for more.
