Man assaulted while fishing

A Springvale man has been assaulted while late-night fishing at Beaumaris on Thursday 26 July.

The 44-year-old victim was approached by a man who greeted him on Beaumaris Yacht Club pier about midnight.

Police have been told the victim has turned his attention to baiting his hook when he was “suddenly hit in the back of the head with a tomahawk.”

Despite his head injuries, the victim has managed to pick up the tomahawk the offender had dropped while fleeing and returned to his Springvale home where his family called an ambulance.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening head injuries.

Glen Eira/Bayside Crime Investigation Unit detectives are treating the incident as a random and unprovoked attack.

Police are searching for a man perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged about 20-years-old, with a skinny build and was wearing a hoody.

Police would like to speak to any witnesses, anyone with dash cam footage or anyone who noticed suspicious behaviour in the area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
