Police have released images of a man wanted over a shooting during an attempted armed robbery of a Springvale South service station on Wednesday, 8 August.

The armed man followed a customer into the 7-11 store on Springvale Road and MacKay Street just before 4.30am, and demanded cash at the front counter, police say.

A 40-year-old male staff member, who tried to lock himself in a store-room behind the counter, was shot in the arm.

He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The alleged shooter unsuccessfully tried to open the till, then fled on foot in a southerly direction.

Armed Crime Squad detectives have released images of a man they wish to speak to in relation to the incident.

He is described as being of African appearance and about 180 centimetres.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a beanie, a black-and-white bandana across his face, dark top and dark pants.

Police are investigating whether there is a link to an attempted armed robbery of a nearby BP service station on Heatherton Road 15 minutes earlier.
