The State Government has placed an order for 10 E-Class trams to be built at Bombardier Transportation’s Dandenong South factory.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan announced the $83 million order, declaring it would support local jobs and help build a “better, comfortable and more reliable public transport network”.

“We’re ensuring more E-Class trams are on the way, supporting local jobs and helping Victorians get where they need to go.”

The extra trams boost the high-capacity E-class fleet to 90. The 70th tram is due to be rolled out in coming weeks.

The large, air-conditioned trams hold more than 200 passengers within their low floors. They include audio-visual information for commuters, and dedicated spaces for prams and mobility aids.

The newest editions will have improved safety features, including a new cab design and extra hand rails and handles.

The Government states the trams would help retain about 100 direct jobs at the Dandenong South factory and 500 in the local supply chains.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said: “Only Labor can build the public transport network Victorians need – giving certainty to industry and supporting local jobs.”

Bombardier also recently received a State Government grant to reduce its energy usage.

Ms Williams said Bombardier identified potential savings of up to $52,000 a year through an energy assessment.

The company was now working with an experienced energy consultant to identify further improvements, review pricing tariffs and look at renewable energy options.

“Energy assessments are a great opportunity for a business to improve their productivity while also reducing operating costs,” Ms Williams said.

“This will make a real difference by helping local business to save on energy bills and reduce waste.”

The grants are open to businesses spending more than $20,000 a year on energy.
