A few glitches in Greater Dandenong’s newest bike path are being ironed out prior to a mass bike ride on 27 October.

There have been reported cracks already emerging on the 17-kilometre Djerring bike trail that follows the recently-built elevated railway line between Yarraman and Caulfield.

The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA), which has managed the path’s construction, says the cracks might have been caused by heavy machinery.

“While the path is now completely open through Noble Park, we are still putting in some finishing touches to make sure the path is safe for cyclists and pedestrians to use and enjoy,” a spokesperson said.

A power-pole which stands inside the path near Noble Park railway station seems not so easily fixed.

The pole is connected to a nearby sub-station. It can’t be removed until the sub-station is moved in 2019, according to the LXRA.

“In the meantime, a safety barrier has been placed around it,” a spokesperson said.

The LXRA is aiming to complete the path in time for the Yarraman to Caulfield Big Bike Ride.

The event, organised by the Australian Cyclist Alliance, spans the trail between Yarraman and Caulfield.

About 200 riders are expected to take part in the family-friendly ride. Serious cyclists have been asked to “leave their need for speed at home”.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the trail, which will link with the Eastlink and the Outer Circle trails, would be a vital connection in the South East.

“It’s not surprising to hear there is such a high level of excitement amongst Melbourne’s cycling community.

“By freeing up this land, we’ve made it available for the community to enjoy – whether that is a recreational ride or jog, or even discovering a nearby suburb that is now easier to get to.”
