THE Southern Football League is searching for a new chief executive.
Wayne Holdsworth tendered his resignation to the SFL board last week after almost six years in the role, with his tenure to end on July 5.
Holdsworth is believed to want to spend more time with his young children and move into a job that requires less after-hours work than football.
SFL chairman Mark Seymour said the league had already received calls from interested candidates.
He said the league would not rush in appointing Holdsworth’s replacement, with former chief executive Kingsley Ellis offering to fill in if needed.
“As I said to Wayne, he has made it difficult to find a replacement because he has left some large shoes to fill,” Seymour said. “Our job ad went up on Friday but we had already had people contacting the league to register interest.”
Seymour said Ellis’ offer to stand in during the interim was much appreciated. “Kingsley has been around a long time and knows the people in club land, so he will give them some comfort we have someone making the right decisions.”
Seymour paid tribute to Holdsworth’s performance and said he understood the decision to resign.
“Invariably in any job like this there is a fair time commitment, and for almost six years now Wayne has been in working those long hours. He has a young family and he likes doing things well and he feels he has not been spending enough time with his family, so he wants to focus on doing that properly.”
Seymour said Holdsworth’s exit came at a good time as the league had launched its plan for the season and was in “maintenance mode”. “As Wayne told me, in football administration you work harder in the off-season while preparing for the year ahead.”
