AN elderly couple survived after plunging 10 metres in their car into Dandenong Creek in Keysborough yesterday morning.

Police believe the silver Camry had travelled west on Cheltenham Road, near EastLink, when the driver lost control and collided with another west-bound car about 10.30. The Camry left the road, coming to rest on the creek’s rock bed.

It took CFA officers 30 minutes to free the couple, having to carry them up a steep, jagged embankment to awaiting ambulances. Both were taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said one of the sedan’s occupants, a 76-year-old man, had suffered chest injuries and cuts to his head.

A 68-year-old woman received injuries to her shoulder and elbow.

Senior Station Officer Andrew Turner, of Dandenong CFA, said it was lucky the car didn’t go down a steeper section of the creek bank, which may have caused the car to flip and crush the occupants.
