SEABL: Rangers storm past Tornadoes

DANDENONG Rangers women got back on the winners’ list with an 80-39 thrashing of Launceston Tornadoes at Dandenong Stadium in the South East Australian Basketball League on Saturday night.

Rangers guard Amelia Todhunter powered her side with 22 points, nine rebounds and six assists. The home side was on top in all areas and, despite spreading out their minutes among development players, still recorded their biggest winning margin of the season.

Tenaya Phillips added 12 points for the Rangers as all their players got on the score sheet.

Lauren Mansfield led the Tornadoes with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The Rangers men again suffered a loss, falling to North-West Tasmania 93-81 with Daequon Montreal the Rangers’ leading scorer with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Troy Payne led the visitors with a game-high 23 points.

Both Rangers teams play a special Anzac night game against Frankston Blues at Frankston Stadium this Thursday night. The women’s game starting at 6pm and the men at 8pm.

The women’s match shapes as an impressive clash with the Blues adding former Ranger Steph Cumming to their roster. Cumming had 22 points in the Blues’ win over Kilsyth on Saturday night.

Frankston RSL is supporting the Anzac Day matches, which will adhere to the Anzac Day practices of reading the Anzac Ode and playing the Last Post.

Frankston Basketball chief executive Nathan Jolly said the club was proud to host matches on such an important day.

“The evening will be a symbolic event with the Ode being delivered by RSL President Brent Clyne and the Last Post played by special guest bugler in front of what we are expecting to be a sell-out crowd at the Frankston Basketball Centre.”

The Rangers will back up from their Anzac Day matches to host Kilsyth Cobras at Dandenong Stadium this Saturday. The women’s game is at 5.30pm and the men’s at 7.30pm.
