THE South East Region Migrant Resource Centre in Dandenong has received more than $42,000 from the State Government to fund a migrant and refugee youth program.
Dandenong MP John Pandazopoulos welcomed the funding, which is part of the new Youth Participation and Access Program that has replaced the former Youth Services Program.
“This program allows local organisations to provide practical support to young people who need it and I am pleased that South Eastern Migrant Resource Centre has new funding for a migrant and refugee youth project,” he said.
“While many young people are doing well, some have trouble getting involved in their communities because of barriers like their background, their sexual preference or because where they live is geographically isolated or socially disadvantaged.”
Following feedback from the youth sector, Mr Pandazopoulos said the Youth Participation and Access Program would provide threeyear grants instead of oneyear grants.
“We have listened to those who work directly with young people by providing funding over three years,” he said.
“This will allow the services to make longerterm plans and will give them more time to build relationships with younger people in their area.”
