Receivers ‘just buying time’

BUYERS of stolen property, beware.
Picking up a cheap Christmas deal that is too good to be true may land buyers in the slammer, or facing hefty fines.
Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Senior Sergeant Terry Kane said in most cases people knew they were buying stolen property, so police would target buyers rather than suppliers.
“It is a well-known fact that if there are no receivers of the goods, then the seller is not likely to steal,” he said.
“People must understand that if you buy so-called dodgy property off anybody, and it is stolen, then that is a criminal offence.”
Det Sen Sgt Kane said authorities did not take the purchase of stolen property lightly.
“People are prepared to take it because it is cheap,” he said.
“But let me tell them: buyer beware, because police and the courts take a dim view on this activity.”
