BEAT the winter blues with small steps towards healthier eating.
That’s the message from new Greater Dandenong social media campaign ’Start with’, focused on the little things residents can do to get healthier.
It’s part of Healthy Together Greater Dandenong, which creates opportunities for eating healthier and moving more where residents live, learn, work and play.
Almost 45 per cent of the municipality’s adults are classified as overweight or obese, and Health Department research found 93 per cent were not eating the five serves of vegies recommended daily for good health.
Greater Dandenong health and wellbeing co-ordinator Emma Bruce said winter was a great time to start adding a few extra vegies to warm dishes like soups, stir fries, curries, pastas and casseroles.
Chef Russell Bald is cooking up quick, healthy and affordable family meals in a demonstration kitchen at Dandenong Market – dubbed The Kitchen – at lunchtime every Tuesday and Friday.
Recipe cards make it easy to buy the ingredients at Dandenong Market and cook them at home.
Health Minister David Davis said it was time to make a change and start getting healthy together.
“And we can do it in a way that is fun and social,” he said.
“Make a meal with the kids or invite a friend over for lunch.
“By making it fun, and doing it together, we can start to create healthy habits for the future.”
