Tin tribute is in the can

THE Heinz factory’s valuable employment drive during Dandenong’s 1960s migration boom will be depicted in the form of a ‘tin clothing’ exhibition lining the city’s shopfront windows.
Artist Linda Spencer has painstakingly handcrafted each tin garment as part of Greater Dandenong Council’s Art in the City initiative.
The garments and the tin material depict 1960s clothing patterns, the same era that the Heinz factory operated in Dandenong.
Heinz was a large employer of local people and migrants and produced products such as baked beans and baby food.
The works have already begun appearing in the Dandenong Plaza’s street windows, and will remain on display until 1 June.
