DANDENONG is now home to more accurate breast cancer screening.
The David Street MIA clinic has introduced 3D mammography, which reduces false-positive findings and the risk of missing cancers.
The technology is also known as breast tomosynthesis and during scanning, an x-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast and takes a series of pictures at various angles which are reconstructed into one high-quality 3D image.
Radiologist Dr Michael Martin said the scan would reduce problems caused by tissue overlap and structural noise, which could occur in 2D mammography imaging.
“Scans are completed in just seconds and the image quality is quite remarkable,” he said.
“It will help doctors to identify breast cancer with increased precision, ultimately improving outcomes for women.”
