Unpaid carers were treated to an entertaining free lunch staged by Carers Victoria.
The guests enjoyed a feast as well as a performance by comedian Doug Chappel during the Dandenong Mingle at Artura on 12 November.
It’s estimated that 2.7 million unpaid carers in Australia put in 36 million hours a week to look after family members and friends with a disability, illness or senior needs.
The annual value is estimated at more than $60 billion.
Carers Victoria chief executive Scott Walker said there was a simple reason for staging Mingle events.
“One of the biggest challenges for carers was being able to take time out for themselves.
“Carers often feel invisible and don’t know where to turn when they need support.
“As the peak body for unpaid carers, we aim to provide an event where carers can come together to share their experiences, enjoy a relaxing and fun day and feel rejuvenated to continue their at times demanding role.”
Mr Walker said the peak body aimed to raise the profile of carers and provides education, counselling and fundraising.
It was lobbying for bipartisan support for the State Government’s Carers Strategy, he said.
