Refugee show hits the air

Greater Dandenong’s citizen of the year is heading a special radio broadcast coinciding with Refugee Week.

Wicki Vikramasingham, an indefatigable advocate for the cause, will speak on 3MDR 97.1FM with several asylum seekers on their journeys by boat, their stay in detention centre custody and lives rebuilt in Australia.

They will be joined by advocates and lawyers such as David Manne about their human rights crusade.

It was a chance to spread awareness on refugee issues, Mr Vikramasingham said.

“We’re appealing to the Government as well as community organisations to voice for the refugees’ freedom from detention centres.”

He says refugees could help revitalise Australia’s regional areas.

“The refugees who are living here are contributing in so many ways. There are engineers, doctors and all sorts of professionals who are useful in this community.

“They are not a burden on this country.”

The show is on 97.1FM on Sunday 16 June, 8am-10am. Details: sanganatham.net.au or 3mdr.com.au.
