A 44-YEAR-OLD woman died following a collision at Doveton at about 12.30am on 31 December.
The woman was travelling towards the city on the Monash Freeway when she ran off the road then along a grass section of road on the wrong side of a guard rail.
The woman’s car struck an embankment and the vehicle became airborne before it struck a section of bridge where Heatherton Road goes over the freeway.
The car finished up on the embankment under the bridge, where it caught fire.
The woman was thrown from the vehicle on impact.
The woman’s death brings the state’s provisional road toll to 289 for 2010, the same as the previous year.
