Small art’s long legacy

Entries are still open for City of Dandenong’s annual miniature art competition 9 x 5.

Each submitted work is confined to a 9-inch by 5-inch panel, a nod to a uniform exhibition of artworks by famous Australian artists in 1889.

In that original show held in Melbourne, Tom Roberts, Charles Conder, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin produced artwork on 9-inch by 5-inch cigar box lids.

The City of Greater Dandenong’s event is nationally recognised for celebrating diversity in the arts community.

The art boards can be bought online at greaterdandenong.com/9by5.

Entries are open until Wednesday 27 November.

The 9 x 5 exhibition will be at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre from December 5-21.
