Dandenong carries points from Cerberus

LAST season, only two sides escaped from Cerberus with a win – and one was the Southern Football League’s eventual premier, Moorabbin Kangaroos.
So it is no wonder the Dandenong Demons celebrated long and hard after leaving the HMAS ground with four premiership points on Saturday.
In windy conditions, the four-point victory was an ideal start to the season for debut Demons’ coach Michael Hawken.
“The ground down there is just like a big wind tunnel, there is hardly a tree in sight,” he said.
“Cerberus is very hard to beat at home, so winning there in round one has really kicked the season off in great fashion.”
Daniel Hoekstra and Robbie Mackwell both impressed for the Demons and full-forward Steven Coates booted three goals.
With Adrian Piccioli and Daniel Calyk still to return to the senior side, Hawken believes his team is good enough to beat Black Rock in two weeks’ time.
“It will certainly be a test. Our side is very different to last year, but we’ll be up there,” he said.
