MARY Colquhoun and Alice Churchill could be the oldest set of twins in Dandenong.
The dynamic duo turned 91 on 29 January and are already looking forward to 2016 – when they plan to celebrate the big 100.
Mary and Alice both live in retirement units in Dandenong Valley. Until Alice was hospitalised with a broken leg eight months ago, they have barely gone more than a day without seeing each other.
“We have never argued or quarrelled at all, really, and we’ve been through quite a lot together,” Mary said.
The pair grew up in a family of 11 and their parents were pioneers of the South Gippsland region.
Mary and Alice have both been widowed, but have children and the Dandenong North Seniors Club to keep them company.
Mary has a 71-year-old son, Bob, and Alice’s daughter, Elaine, is a regular visitor.
Alice completed a lengthy rehabilitation at Kingston after breaking her leg and has since endured a hip operation.
Much to her delight, she was released from Dandenong Hospital for an hour to celebrate her birthday with her sister.
The pair attend the Dandenong North Seniors Club each Monday and Thursday. Mary said it wouldn’t be possible without the lovely people at local taxi company, Dandenong Taxis.
“We have both slowed down a bit over the years, but the Dandenong Taxi service always picks us up on time – they’re great,” Mary said.
