USUALLY the sound of music in the Dandenong Park signifies a celebration.
But that’s not always the case any more.
Starting last month, repetitive elevator music will be playing in the park in an attempt to deter anti-social behaviour.
City of Greater Dandenong community services director Mark Doubleday said the idea to trial the pilot outdoor muzak program was derived following a meeting between the council and the Dandenong Police.
“The council became aware of increased levels of anti-social behaviour at Dandenong Park. An area of particular concern was the Stan Prior Soundshell,” he said.
“An outdoor music system was installed in August which plays repetitive elevator-style music at low levels between 11.30am to 3am.”
Mr Doubleday said the aim of the project was to reduce levels of anti-social behaviour in and around the Dandenong Park stage area, increase perceptions of safety for legitimate users, displace groups using the space inappropriately and encourage legitimate users to utilise the park for its intended purpose. The cost of the project is $3400, which includes equipment purchase and installation.
Mr Doubleday said similar initiatives had been introduced in other areas across Australia and had been effective in reducing anti-social behaviour around retail strips and transport hubs. He said the council would consider using it at other locations throughout Greater Dandenong depending on its effectiveness.
The pilot project will run for 12 months and will be monitored by the council and local police.
