STUDENTS at Dandenong Primary School are getting green thumbs while studying multiculturalism.
The students got dirty planting their new kitchen garden last month and when the produce is ready, will cook up a storm of multicultural dishes.
The school is taking part in the Gould League’s Multicultural School Gardens program which aims to strengthen the links with the Sudanese community.
Dandenong Primary School assistant principal Anne Pereira said it was a valuable project.
“This is such a valuable project as it encourages and acknowledges the diversity of Australian society and places inclusive education at the forefront teaching all cultural groups about different foods focusing on a wholesome idea of growing our own food,” Ms Pereira said.
“What better way to do this than through our stomachs!”
Students will do regular gardening and cooking activities to teach them skills in gardening, active lifestyle and healthy eating.
At the end of the project, they will cook traditional dishes using the produce and share stories and information about different cultures.
The project is sponsored by the City of Greater Dandenong and plant seedlings were provided by Scotsburn Nurseries.
