Celebration of cultures

GREATER Dandenong is celebrating its multiculturalism this week during Refugee Week.
There are a number of music, dance, art and literature events planned for Friday to acknowledge the achievement of refugee communities and individuals from refugee backgrounds.
Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades said Refugee Week, which runs from 19 to 25 June, was a great time to celebrate the city’s multiculturalism.
“A number of our residents have come here as refugees from countries including Afghanistan, Burma, Iraq, Sudan and Sri Lanka,” Cr Blades said.
“The City of Greater Dandenong has a long and proud history of supporting the settlement of new migrants and is one of 73 councils across Australia who signed a Refugee Welcome Zone Declaration.”
On Friday a music event will be held at the Dandenong Market from 10am to midday. Cultural Fusion, a free event for youth, will be held at the Castle from 6.30pm to 10.30pm and will include DJs, dance groups, games and RAP crews. The Springvale and Dandenong libraries will also have Refugee Week displays.
