Things looking up for lifts

By CASEY NEILL

LIFTS at Springvale’s Number 8 car park will get a “major refurbishment” over the next five weeks, but just how often they’re expected to be in working order remains unclear.
Councillor Sean O’Reilly at last Monday’s council meeting asked engineering services director Bruce Rendall what the minimum operating time was for the Balmoral Avenue lifts.
He said the car park’s top two or three levels were constantly empty because the lifts were regularly out of service.
“It’s impinging on the reputation and usage of car park,” he said.
Mr Rendall said the lifts were “not meeting current standards” and the council had worked with the car park’s developer to secure a refurbishment.
“We will then monitor them for three months and report back to council,” he said.
He said the council could consider replacing the lifts in the future if the refurbishment is unsuccessful, but would not confirm how long users could expect the lifts to operate for once they had been fixed.
