Booze sales extended

DANDENONG IGA can now sell liquor on Christmas Day and Good Friday, despite concerns about the impact on the community.
City of Greater Dandenong councillors last Monday passed the application from the 78 Hemmings Street store, five votes to four.
It can now open 9am to 8pm on the public holidays, in addition to noon to 11pm on Anzac Day, 10am to 11pm Sundays and 9am to 11pm every other day.
Councillor John Kelly opposed the permit.
“Last time I checked we were still a Christian country. I think there are enough days in the year to serve alcohol,” he said.
Cr Kelly also raised concerns about alcohol-fuelled violence.
“I think it’s time this council put its hand up and showed some strength,” he said.
Cr Roz Blades agreed, and said the drug of choice at local addiction support services “month after month, is alcohol”.
