ILLUMINATED Voices is inspiring and applauding Greater Dandenong women.
The exhibition is on display at Heritage Hill in Dandenong until 13 April and opened to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The day is held on 8 March each year to honour women’s advancement and celebrate their economic, political and social achievements.
Illuminated Voices features poetry that local women of different ages and cultural backgrounds created at City of Greater Dandenong workshops last December.
Professional poets Alia Gabres and Karen Throssell helped participants consider what it meant to be a woman and how women were empowered.
Written words, ideas and voices from Keysborough College year 12 literature students and members of the Al-Emaan Muslim Women’s Support Group and Noble Park Primary School Women’s Group came together through digital projections, lightbox installations and soundscapes.
The works respond to themes such as education, home, family, gender equality and life as a woman in Australia and explore the challenges and accomplishments of women in the community.
“Being a woman is being beautiful inside and out, strong, responsible, and a care giver by nature,” an excerpt from one piece reads.
“This is what I call a woman. And I am proud to be a woman.”
Heritage Hill is at 66 McCrae Street, Dandenong.
