THE Journal farewelled several members of staff as they signed up to the fight in Europe and Turkey during World War I.
On 1 July 1915 the paper reported that “the latest batch of volunteers from Dandenong includes two from the staff of the Journal, viz, Privates P.J. Stagg and Geo. Holford, who go into camp at Seymour this week“.
“Corporal Harold Tulloch (who has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant) was the first of our employees to enlist.
“His parents received a letter from him some days ago, in which he makes modest reference in regard to 12 days’ fighting against the Turks at Gallipoli.“
All three men survived the war.
It is not known whether they returned to work at the Journal.
