FORMER and current Journal staff gathered at the Dandenong Club on Monday night to celebrate the newspaper’s 150th anniversary.
Former classified advertising manager Barbara Haw spoke, as did former advertising manager Georgie McLeod and former chief sub-editor Peter Hendy.
The trio recalled the golden days of newspapers when the classified section ran at 22 pages, and journalists and editors picked up stories at the pub.
There was also the infamous story of an advertisement that was meant to promote cooked chickens, but instead went in the paper offering cooked children.
Managing director of Star News Group, which owns the Journal, Paul Thomas, also spoke as did editor Narelle Coulter.
A short film commissioned to celebrate the sesquicentenary was premiered. The film will be available for viewing soon on the Journal website.
A special 150th commemorative edition of the Journal was published this week.
