THE best Anzac bickie baker will take home $200 from this year’s Dandenong Show.
Art and craft pavilion chairwoman Margaret Weightman said the competition would commemorate the Anzac Centenary.
“That’s why we’re doing it, to bring into people’s minds what went on in the First World War,” she said.
What makes a winning biscuit?
“It’s texture, it’s how they come out in size and that they’re not all over the place,” Ms Weightman said.
“It’s a visual thing as well as having a taste. It’s up to the judge – every judge is different of course.”
Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL Sub-Branch president John Wells will award the $200 prize at 2pm on Saturday 14 November in the art and craft pavilion.
Mr Wells and his members are gearing up for the annual Poppy Appeal in the lead-up to Remembrance Day on 11 November.
From late October, thousands of Poppy Appeal volunteers around the state will be selling the iconic red poppy to raise funds for current and former servicemen and women in need.
Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of France and Belgium, and since 1921 they have been used in remembrance of those who fell during times of war.
Mr Wells thanked the community for wearing poppies with pride.
They’ll be available from Woolworths and Officeworks stores, RSL sub-branches and volunteer collectors.
Anzac biscuit competition entries close on 17 October and entry forms are available from www.dandyshow.com.au. Call Ms Weightman on 0408 387 126 for more information.
